So you want a website but don't know what you
should be doing first? Well here's a few tips
to get you started:
| Think of your site "name".
The name of your company or product should
be your first choice. If that is already
taken, any rendition that you are comfortable
with will work just as well. Sometimes
the catchier the better. Then we can search
the many Domain name registrars (they'll
be the one's that ultimately "register"
your name and lock it in for you")
to see if your name is available. When
searching for availability of a name,
you are given simple variations if your
particular name has already been registered.
But don't worry, if you haven't figured
out a name you like yet, we've still got
time. In the interim we can still begin
design on your new site! At mydesYn.com we
understand that all categories of people
have different visions and different needs,
which means that you can’t use the same
layout, colours, copy and approach. |
Now comes
your
"job". You'll need to get your
content, or copy, together. If they haven't
already done so, I point my clients to
the internet and browse around and get
a feel for what you like and
don't like in other websites. What colors
work for you? Do you like the plainer
simpler sites, or do you like a little
more uniqueness? What are other sites similar
to yours doing? But don't steal their ideas!
Just use that as your jumping off point
if you're completely at a lost as to where
to start. If you've already gotten your
ideas together and/or a print marketing
plan outlined that's even better. Your
site should relate as much as possible
to your other marketing materials. You
want your clients to be able
to relate to your site as being
your product. Here's some basic info you'll
need.
About us: Who are
you? What do you do? How long have
you been doing what you do? What makes
your company unique? This is where
you let people know what you need
them to know about you and/or your
company or product?
Contact info:
email addresses, phone numbers, fax
numbers, address.
Clients: people,
companies, events, etc.,
Pictures: any and
all that you like or think could enhance
your "business" card. Whether
they are personal pictures, graphics,
logos, promo shots, etc.

Remember, each website may have different
requirements. A website that represents services
from an electrical contractor requires a different
design approach from a website representing
a Mortgage company.
